The last two years had changed the quaint village. Gone were many of the old-world homes. In their place stood modern versions with vinyl siding and metal roofs. Grass and new roads replaced the scorch marks left by the demons. Angels and humans walked openly amongst each other, all having sacrificed much when the creatures attacked. This was a positive change and it lightened her heart.

“Hello,” she smiled at the passerby. One of Natalya’s people—No, they are my people, too, she thought. Bree needed to remember not all had magic.

“Good day, Chaj.” The man returned her greeting and smile.

Yes, he definitely was one of the Clan to call her a Chaj. She was unmarried but she hadn’t been raised as Clan, nor was she the type to be subservient to any man. Then again, she noted, neither were her sisters. Maybe—just maybe—if the right guy came along, she could invite him out for lunch or dinner.

Bree put all of it out of her mind and took the path which led to Melody’s newly built home. The two-story Cape Cod, complete with shutters, complemented the street. Its eggshell white clapboard siding with black shutters stood out amid the garish looking Victorians. It gave class to the neighborhood, she thought. Then again, she wasn’t one for the traditional paint colors of the Victorian era. Her sharp knock upon the cranberry colored steel door went unanswered for a moment and then a sharp squeal pierced her ears, causing her to cover them. She knew that sound. Heard it every time she visited and hoped it never stopped. Maeve. It was a happy sound. A joyful cry of happiness that lightened every burden she carried.

“It’s Aunt Bree,” she heard a young girl shouting from within the house. The locks turned quickly and the door was

yanked open. Once she was pulled inside, the door was shut and locked again.

She hugged Maeve as soon as she stepped inside. “What’s going on, squirt?”

“Mom and I were in the attic gathering my old clothes for charity. Since all my siblings are brothers, I figure it’s time to get rid of the stuff I no longer wear or use. I am a young woman, now.”

Bree nodded, hiding her smirk behind the sudden urge to itch her nose. “You are, indeed. What are you now, twenty-five?”

“You know I’m about to turn thirteen and, according to Sigfrida, most girls my age would be married off by now in the Clans.” Maeve looked worried.

“Yes, but that was back in the Dark Ages when we women were considered property. Back then, I could never have been a Doctor. I would never have been anything more than someone’s wife. Your Aunt Natalya is Queen. She would never have attained the People’s love and faith during the dark times. They were too set in their ways. Hard times bring a softening of the heart; a yearning for change.” At least it sounded plausible, but what the hell did she actually know? It was still a man’s world, and women had to fight each day for what they achieved.
